Jahlisa Murphy
At the core of who I am, I love to serve, nurture, and hold space for others. I am the youngest of 5 children from my mother which they have contributed to me becoming an auntie of 30+ nieces and nephews. This is how I began as a doula, or as my family and friends like to call me, “The Professional Auntie”. It is a privilege and title that I hold near and dear to my heart. So I am excited to share my life’s commitment to serving through my work as a doula with many families to come.
As a birth doula, my mission is to provide exceptional emotional and physical support to parents-to-be and their families during labor and delivery. In my role as your doula, I will ensure you have the necessary information to make informed decisions regarding your baby’s birth. During your pregnancy, I provide reassurance with a unique and caring perspective to affirm your ability to have the pregnancy, birth, and recovery that you desire and deserve. My role at your birth is to be of the utmost support to you and your partner while making suggestions to progress labor with relaxation techniques, massage, positioning, and other methods for your comfort. I am an independent and self-employed doula, so my dedication is to YOU and your family, not your caregiver or place of birth.
I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago by my “sacred village” which included my maternal Aunt, Sister, and Grandmother Janie B whom I hope to honor in my work caring for mothers and families in the way that she did so effortlessly for her family and many others that she loved. It is a blessing to do this work.
When I am not attending to birth work I enjoy spending time with my amazing husband who truly makes my job as a doula so much easier. I love cooking and trying new Pinterest recipes and crafts. I also love learning new things about caring for the plants I have in my home. Spending quality time with my family is also a priority to me and I enjoy making memories with them often.
WHY WORK WITH ME
My journey as a doula began long before I received my certifications because I am THEE Professional Auntie. My love for babies, children, and supportive family structures is what led me to realize the real impact I can make as a doula. My background is a true compliment to birth work. I graduated from Southern Illinois University with my bachelor's and master's degrees both in social work. I have over 20 years of advocacy experience within child welfare. I have worked in crisis intervention supporting children and adolescents experiencing mental health crises, among many other things. Most recently I have served for 6 years as an academic advisor and mentor within higher education for students earning their masters in social work and clinical mental health counseling. I have always been in a room advocating, empowering, and encouraging others and I want to do the same for you and your family. Outside of my Professional Auntie status, I am a certified birth and postpartum doula with additional certifications in breastfeeding and lactation. I’m also CPR certified to ensure the safety of you and your baby if needed. Keeping your family safe and healthy is my main priority, I am also fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and always arrive with my mask on and ready to service you and your family.
